Customer Unit
The Customer Unit is initially set on the Start tab of the Value Modeling tool. You may change it here, if appropriate.
Alternative Customer Units
Click the Add Alternative Unit link to create a new unit of measure for the model. Enter the name of the new unit, followed by the number of original units equal to one new unit. For example, if the original unit is per month, and you want to use the unit per year, enter "year," followed by "12," so that the conversion factor reads, "1 year = 12 month."
Click the button at the right of the row to flip the display of the unit conversion. (This is helpful especially when the original unit is smaller than the new unit.) Then, enter the number of new units equal to one original unit. For example, if the original unit was per year, and you want to convert the model to the unit per month, enter "12," followed by "month," so that the conversion factor reads, "12 month = 1 year." (Note that the conversion display flip is temporary. The conversion factors are always stored in terms of 1 "alternative unit" equals X "original units.")
You may use the drop-down menu at the right to change the precision associated with the currency in this alternative unit of measure. (This is helpful especially when the original unit is smaller than the new unit, because the total values tend to be order(s) of magnitude higher, rendering the additional precision less impactful.)
For each alternative unit, a conversion factor variable is created, which you can see in the variables list on the Summary tab. There, you may convert the variable to a subformula, if necessary. To delete an alternative unit of measure from the model, click the X at the right of its row. Then, you may delete the conversion variable from the variables list on the Summary tab. (Note that you may not delete an alternative unit of measure if it is currently selected as the model display unit, or if it is used in any value driver or price calculation.)
Competitor Unit
The Competitor Unit is initially set on the Units & Prices tab of the Value Modeling tool. You may change it here, if appropriate. Follow the instructions for Alternative Customer Units above for entering conversions, precisions, etc.
Offering Unit
The Offering Unit is initially set on the Units & Prices of the Value Modeling tool. You may change it here, if appropriate. Follow the instructions for Alternative Customer Units above for entering conversions, precisions, etc.
NOTE: If there is a difference in performance with Competitor Unit vs Offering per Customer Unit, then an Acquisition Efficiency exists. See “Acquisition Efficiency” Resource in left-hand panel.
